Preparing & Rehydrating Your Flowers

Peony Rose Ranunculus Flower Centerpiece flowers

It is important when making centerpieces with fresh flowers that you prepare each stem in advance. When you receive your peonies, roses, and ranunculus, remove them from the packaging, including cardboard, paper, or plastic. Cut all the flowers and greenery stems approximately 1 inch on a 45-degree angle. If possible, cut under water or running water. Clear away extra leaves and foliage that will be under the waterline to prevent bacteria build-up. You want to keep the flowers and greenery as fresh as can be!

Removing Rose Thorns– remove thorns from the rose stems with a rose thorn stripper or a paring knife. If you are using a paring knife, be careful, removing individual thorns not to cut yourself. Cut each thorn at the stem without damaging the rose stem.

Rehydrating Peonies– Peonies will arrive in tight buds, sometimes partially open. These flowers drink a lot of water, especially the first day of hydrating. Check how much water is in your vase throughout the day to ensure the peonies are in at least 4-5 inches of clean water. Use a tall vase to help support the peonies while they are hydrating. To help the peonies bloom faster, place them in warm water and sunlight.

Step 4 – Rotate the vase as you build your centerpiece to create a full, free-flowing ensemble. Be sure to pay attention to how the stems tilt to help create a natural arrangement. Pro Tip: Building your flower arrangements in front of a mirror will help you see various angles and sparse sections. Find any holes in the centerpiece and fill them with flowers and greenery.
